Tahun Baru- New years day. New years eve is celebrated with carnival shows and fire works, in Christian areas the festivities are more exuberant.

Imlek-Chinese New year is not an official holiday in Indonesia but many of the Chinese shops and businesses close for two days

March/April

Wafat Isa Al-Masih- Good Friday

Balinese Saka New Year

Kartini Day-this is rather like the western celebration of Mothers day, when the women get dressed in national dress and are pampered by their husbands and children. This is a celebration of the birthday of Raden Ajeng Kartini, who was a pioneer of women's emancipation

May

Waisak Day-marks the birth and death of Buddha at Candi Mendut outside Yogyakarta. Monks carry flowers, candles, holy fire and images of Buddha on the walk to Borobudur.

Kenaikan Isa Al-Masih-Ascention day

August

Independance day- This is the most important national holiday celebrated on the 17th but the partying normally continues for the whole month. With processions, dancing and general merry making on the agenda, it has a habit of delaying transport.

October

Hari Pancasila- 1st October sees this holiday celebrating the five basic principals of pancasila

Armed Forces Day- The 5th is the anniversary of the founding of the Indonesian armed forces and they hold military parades and demonstrations

December

Christmas Day- 25th is celebrated by the Christian population, the Bataks of Sumatra, the Toraja and Minahasans of Sulawesi and in some islands of Nusa Tenggara and Irian Jaya
